Click-to-Message Ads in 2026: The Ad Now Ends in a Chat
Meta's own numbers show ad money moving into WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger chats, and what happens in the first reply now decides the sale.

Click-to-message ads are ads that open a WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger chat instead of a landing page, and they are where a growing share of Meta ad money now goes. Meta told investors that click-to-message ads grew US revenue 50% year over year in Q4 2025, and paid business messaging on WhatsApp crossed a $2 billion annual run rate in the same quarter. The catch for advertisers: once the ad ends in a chat, the sale depends on who answers and how fast. In Entagl's own study of 32,581 conversations, replies inside 60 seconds converted at 35.1%, against 12.2% for replies that took 5 to 60 minutes.
If you run Meta ads for a clinic, a store or a service business, the money you spend now ends in a chat. The rest of this post is about what to do once that chat opens.
What is a click-to-message ad?
A click-to-message ad is a normal Facebook or Instagram ad with a "Send message" button. Tapping it opens a chat with your business in WhatsApp, Instagram Direct or Messenger, often with a pre-filled first message. There is no form and no landing page. The customer is in a conversation with you within a second of tapping.
That is the whole appeal. It is also the whole risk, because a landing page works at 3 a.m. without anyone watching it, and a chat does not.
Why is ad money moving into the inbox?
Meta's own earnings reports and calls tell most of the story.
| Signal | Number | Source |
|---|---|---|
| US revenue growth from click-to-message ads, Q4 2025 | +50% year over year | Marketing Brew, Meta Q4 2025 call |
| WhatsApp paid business messaging, Q4 2025 | Over $2 billion annual run rate | Marketing Brew, Meta Q4 2025 call |
| Family of Apps "other revenue", Q3 2026 | $1.1 billion, +59%, driven mainly by WhatsApp paid messaging and subscriptions | Meta Q3 2026 earnings call |
| Average price per ad, Q3 2026 | +14% year over year | Meta Q3 2026 results |
| Ad impressions, Q3 2026 | +10% year over year | Meta Q3 2026 results |
Read the last two rows together. Each ad you buy cost about 14% more in Q3 2026 than a year earlier. When the price of each ad keeps climbing, the cheapest place to find margin is what happens after the click, and for a click-to-message ad that is the conversation itself.
Meta is also telling businesses where it thinks buying is heading. On the Q3 2026 call, Mark Zuckerberg said that buying something means talking to the business's agent, not only visiting its website. You do not have to share that vision to see the direction. The chat is turning into the storefront.
Why does reply speed matter more for these ads than for others?
Because the customer started the conversation seconds ago and is still holding the phone. A landing-page visitor might come back tomorrow. A person who tapped "Send message" and got silence usually opens the next ad in their feed.
The Entagl Response Velocity Study measured this across 1,247 businesses in 9 countries:
| First reply time | Conversion rate |
|---|---|
| Under 60 seconds | 35.1% |
| 1 to 5 minutes | 20.4% |
| 5 to 60 minutes | 12.2% |
| 1 to 24 hours | 7.1% |
| Over 24 hours | 1.6% |
In head-to-head cases where one buyer messaged two or more sellers about a similar product, 78.4% bought from whoever answered first. The study is observational, not a randomized trial, and the within-business estimate of the speed effect was smaller (about 1.9x). Even the cautious number is large when you are paying for every chat that opens.
What does WhatsApp charge when a chat starts from an ad?
Less than you might expect, if you are quick. Meta's WhatsApp pricing documentation says that when someone messages you through a click-to-WhatsApp ad, and you reply inside the customer service window, your reply is free and opens a "free entry point" window that can stay open for up to 7 days. During that window Meta does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages to that person.
Two practical points follow:
- A slow first reply costs you twice. You lose conversion, and if you miss the customer service window you also lose the free window.
- Plan follow-ups inside the 7 days. A reminder on day 3 or a "still interested?" on day 5 costs nothing from Meta while the window is open.
Outside ad-started chats, the rules changed on October 1, 2026, when Meta began charging for service replies past 1,000 a month per number. We covered that change and what Entagl does about it in Meta now charges for WhatsApp replies.
How do you measure a click-to-message ad?
This is where most accounts go wrong. Optimize a click-to-message campaign to "conversations started" and Meta will find you people who like to start conversations. That is not the same as people who book.
The fix is to send the real outcome back to Meta. Each ad-started WhatsApp chat carries a click ID (ctwa_clid). If you keep it and report a booking or purchase against it through the Conversions API, Meta learns which clicks turned into customers and can buy more of those. The ID only arrives on the first message, so a system that does not save it right then has lost it for good.
| Optimize to | What Meta learns | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Messages started | Who taps "Send message" | Lots of chats, many idle |
| Leads reported from chat | Who shares contact details | Better, still loose |
| Bookings or purchases reported from chat | Who actually becomes a customer | Fewer, better conversations |
We go deeper on outcome-based optimization in how to use AI for Meta ads without burning budget.
What should the first reply to an ad click say?
Answer the ad. The person tapped on a specific offer, and their first message is often just "Hi" or "Is this available?". A reply that asks "How can I help you today?" makes them explain the ad back to you, and some of them will not bother.
A good first reply does three things in one message:
- names the product, service or offer from the ad they clicked;
- answers the question they asked (price range, availability, how it works);
- offers the next step, such as two open appointment times or a link to the product.
Then keep the thread going. If they stop replying, a short follow-up inside the free window is worth sending. Our guide to following up with leads who stop replying covers timing and wording.
How does Entagl handle conversations that start from an ad?
Entagl's Receptionist answers WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger conversations around the clock, and it treats ad-started chats differently from ordinary ones:
- It knows which ad they clicked. When a chat arrives from an ad, Entagl records the ad and passes its headline and text to the AI, which is told to treat this as a paid click and answer the customer's actual question in the first reply. Your team sees the same ad details in the inbox.
- It saves the click ID on arrival. For click-to-WhatsApp chats, the
ctwa_clidis saved the moment the first message arrives. - It can report bookings back to Meta. When the AI books an appointment in an ad-started conversation, Entagl can send that booking to Meta through the Conversions API, once you switch the Conversions API setting on for the connected account.
- It books the appointment. The agent checks real availability and puts the appointment in your calendar, in 100+ languages.
On the ad side, where it is switched on for your workspace, the Ads Co-Pilot reads those booked results, proposes budget and creative changes, and waits for your approval before anything changes in Ads Manager.
What this does not fix
A fast, accurate reply cannot rescue an offer nobody wants or an ad that promises something your business does not sell. Click-to-message ads also tend to bring more casual questions than a long form does, so expect a lower share of chats to turn into bookings than form fills, and judge the campaign on cost per booked customer, not cost per chat.
FAQ
Are click-to-message ads better than lead form ads?
They suit different buyers. A chat feels easier for a customer with a quick question and lets you answer objections on the spot, while a form collects details in one go. If you run forms, the speed rules are the same; our Facebook lead ads follow-up guide covers that side.
How fast should I reply to a click-to-WhatsApp ad?
As fast as you can, ideally within a minute. In the Entagl Response Velocity Study, sub-60-second replies converted at 35.1% against 12.2% for replies in 5 to 60 minutes. Replying inside the customer service window also opens Meta's free 7-day messaging window.
Do I pay WhatsApp fees on chats that start from an ad?
If you reply inside the customer service window, Meta's documentation says the reply is free and opens a free entry point window of up to 7 days in which marketing, utility, authentication and service messages to that person are not charged.
What is ctwa_clid and why does it matter?
It is the click ID Meta attaches to the first message of a chat that started from a click-to-WhatsApp ad. Reporting a booking or purchase against it through the Conversions API tells Meta which clicks became customers, so it can find more people like them.
Can an AI agent answer click-to-message ads without sounding generic?
Yes, if it can see the ad. An agent that knows the headline and text of the ad the customer tapped can answer "is this still available?" with the actual product and next step, instead of asking the customer to repeat themselves.
Paying more for every click and answering the chat an hour later is the most expensive way to run Meta ads. Book a 30-minute demo and we will show you a click-to-WhatsApp chat going from first message to booked appointment, with the result reported back to Meta.
