Holiday 2026: Traffic Is Up, Orders Aren't. Check Your Inbox.

The 2026 holiday season will set a record, with Cyber Week alone expected to bring in $47.5 billion, but traffic is growing far faster than orders. Adobe expects US online sales of $275.1 billion from November 1 to December 31, up 6.7%, with AI-referred visits to retail sites up 130%. Salesforce's Shopping Index found global digital traffic grew 18% in the second quarter while order volume rose just 1%. The gap sits between the click and the checkout.

A good share of that gap plays out in the inbox. In Entagl's Response Velocity Study, conversations answered within 60 seconds converted at 35.1%, against 7.1% for replies that took 1 to 24 hours. This post reads the two biggest 2026 holiday forecasts side by side, picks out what they say about where shoppers ask questions now, and ends with a short list of what a store should have working before Thanksgiving on November 26.

What do the 2026 holiday forecasts actually say?

Both forecasts show more spend, more of it on phones, and AI-referred traffic more than doubling.

Metric (2026 holiday season) Figure Source
US online sales, Nov 1 to Dec 31 $275.1 billion, up 6.7% Adobe
Cyber Week (Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday) $47.5 billion, up 7.4% Adobe
Biggest single days Cyber Monday $15.1B; Black Friday $12.9B (up 9.2%) Adobe
Share of Thanksgiving spend on mobile 63% (season overall: 57.4%) Adobe
AI-referred traffic to US retail sites Up 130% year over year (Thanksgiving up 159%) Adobe
Global digital traffic vs orders, Q2 2026 Traffic up 18%, orders up 1% Salesforce
Cart abandonment 82% Salesforce
Shoppers using an AI assistant at some point 50%, up 67% year over year Salesforce

Two numbers in that table deserve a second look. The 130% jump counts shoppers who clicked through to a store from an AI chat or browser tool, so the AI has already shown them your product. And the 82% abandonment rate means most carts still end without a purchase, even as visits climb.

Why is traffic growing faster than orders?

Salesforce's own explanation is that the path to purchase has split apart. Shoppers find products in AI assistants and social feeds, then buy wherever it is easiest at that moment. Engagement on brand-owned sites fell 7% year over year, while "new channels" like AI assistants and social media grew 38%.

Money is tighter at the same time. Salesforce reports that 35% of holiday shoppers are actively trading down to cheaper alternatives, and free shipping ranked as the single most important factor in choosing a store across every income level. A shopper comparing three stores on price will not wait long for an answer about delivery dates.

Where do holiday shoppers ask their questions in 2026?

Increasingly, not on your product page. They ask in three places:

  • Social DMs and comments. Adobe expects social media's share of holiday revenue to rise 17%, and influencers and creators already account for 22% of affiliate traffic. A shopper who sees a product in a creator's post usually asks about it right there, in Instagram or WhatsApp. Salesforce predicts social commerce will grow at 9x the rate of traditional e-commerce this season.
  • AI assistants, before they reach you. Half of shoppers now use one somewhere in the purchase, per Salesforce. Adobe's July survey found 77% of shoppers who used AI for online shopping felt more confident in their purchase.
  • Your own chat and messaging, at the moment of doubt. Shoppers use general AI tools for gift ideas and price hunting, but for order status, returns, and customer service they prefer the brand's own assistant. 41% said a brand-owned AI assistant answering their questions made them "much more confident" in a purchase, and another 36% said "somewhat more confident."

You do not control what a third-party AI tells a shopper about you. You do control what happens when that shopper messages you directly.

How much does reply speed matter on Black Friday?

A lot, and peak days make it worse, because message volume spikes exactly when your team is busiest. The Response Velocity Study covered 32,581 customer conversations across 1,247 businesses: conversations answered within 60 seconds converted at 35.1%, compared with 12.2% at 5 to 60 minutes and 7.1% at 1 to 24 hours. In multi-vendor inquiries, where one buyer messaged several stores about a similar product, the first store to reply won 78.4% of the attributable purchases.

Now put that next to Thanksgiving. Adobe expects 63% of that day's online spend to come from phones, much of it impulse buying. Those shoppers are messaging between other things, often in the evening or on a day your staff is off. We covered what that costs a business in After-Hours Lead Capture: Who Answers the 9 PM Message?, and the holiday weekend is the most concentrated version of that problem all year.

The brands that already acted on this saw results last season. Salesforce reports that retailers with branded AI shopper agents grew holiday sales 59% faster in 2025 (6.2% vs 3.9%), and it predicts one in three e-commerce sites will have a site-specific shopper agent live by Cyber Week 2026. That correlation does not prove an agent caused the growth.

What should a store have ready before Thanksgiving?

Four weeks is enough time to fix the basics, and not enough time for a big rebuild. In rough order of payoff:

  1. List the ten questions you will get most. Shipping cutoffs for Christmas delivery, return windows for gifts, stock on your best sellers, sizing, and "where is my order." These answers decide the sale, and most of them change in November.
  2. Make sure every channel gets an answer, including at night. Check Instagram DMs, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and your site chat. A message that sits until Monday morning is, on the numbers above, mostly a lost order.
  3. Connect answers to live data. "Is this in stock?" and "where is my order?" need your real catalog and order system, not a static FAQ that was right in October. We explain why in AI for Online Stores: Answer Product Questions, Close the Sale.
  4. Decide what goes to a human. Refund disputes, damaged items, and large orders should reach a person quickly, with the conversation history in front of them.
  5. Do not launch something untested on Black Friday. If you are adding AI to your inbox, start now with a small slice of traffic and widen it as it proves itself. Our guide on how to launch an AI agent without losing customers walks through a staged rollout.

You may be thinking this is a big-retailer problem. It hits small stores harder. A large retailer has a seasonal support team. A five-person store has the owner's phone.

Where does Entagl fit?

Entagl's Receptionist answers customers on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and website chat, in 100+ languages. For Shopify stores it can look up products and orders, so stock and delivery questions get real answers instead of a link to the FAQ. It reads photos and voice notes customers send, and it hands a conversation to your team inbox when a person should take over. Pricing is based on usage, with no per-seat or per-contact fees, so a holiday spike does not mean adding paid seats.

If agents shopping on a customer's behalf is the part of this you want to plan for, our piece on agentic commerce in 2026 covers the payment protocols and what it takes to stay on an AI's shortlist.

What can't the forecasts tell you?

Forecasts are forecasts. Adobe's figures cover US online spend and are built from Adobe Analytics data; Salesforce's are global and mix observed data with survey responses and predictions. Neither tells you how your category or your customers will behave, and the Q2 traffic-versus-orders gap is one quarter's reading, not a law. Our own study is observational, so it shows a strong association between reply speed and conversion rather than a guaranteed lift for any single store. Treat all of it as direction, then watch your own numbers week by week through December.

FAQ

When are Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2026?

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. Adobe defines Cyber Week as the five days from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday and expects $47.5 billion in US online spend across them.

How much AI traffic should retailers expect this holiday season?

Adobe forecasts AI-referred traffic to US retail sites will rise 130% year over year across November and December, with the biggest jump on Thanksgiving (up 159%), followed by Black Friday (up 95%) and Cyber Monday (up 88%). Salesforce predicts 20% of all holiday e-commerce traffic will come from AI chat agents, a figure that includes consumer bots, background agents, and price scrapers.

Why are my store visits up but sales flat?

Salesforce measured global digital traffic up 18% in Q2 2026 with orders up only 1%, and cart abandonment at 82%. Common causes are price comparison across several stores, slow or missing answers to delivery and stock questions, and shoppers deciding inside social apps or AI tools instead of on your site.

Do customers really want to talk to a brand's AI assistant?

For some tasks, yes. Salesforce found shoppers prefer general AI tools for gift ideas and deal hunting, but prefer a brand's own assistant for order status, returns, and customer service. 41% said a brand-owned assistant answering their questions made them much more confident in buying.

Is it too late to add AI customer service before Black Friday?

Not if you keep the scope tight. Four weeks is enough to cover your most common questions on your main channels and test them on a small share of conversations before the holiday weekend. It is too late for a large, untested launch, so start small and keep a person on hand for anything sensitive.
